SPEM successfully defended their trademark on european market
(Maribor, Slovenia, May 5th, 2010)
The Office of Harmonization for the Internal Market (OHIM) of EU ruled in favour of SPEM Communication group against European social democrats (PES – Party of EU Socialists), when they were trying to register its trade mark. The president of the party is Poul Nyrup Rasmussen, Slovenian political party SD is also a member.
PES political party filled a request to register their trademark as SPE. SPEM Communication Group noticed the request and filled a complaint because PES was trying to register their trademark in similar categories as SPEM Communication Group is already registered. Because of possible confusions in similar names and pronunciation and because of the interest to protect the brand of similar categories, the OHIM ruled against the registration of SPE trademark in same categories.
SPEM trade mark, whose owners are Božidar Novak and Suzana Mihelin Ritlop, has protected since 1994 and since 2004 in the EU area. The name has developed from the former name Studio for political and economic marketing, which was established in 1986 as a student working group for communication and marketing support for social actions and conducting polls for Slovenian and Yugoslavian media and elections. In 1991 public relations became a part of the company’s business, in 1994 SPEM Communication Group was established and started developing consulting activities for strategic communication of companies.
